Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to look into the possibility of a new craft-based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.

This one off intensive throwing workshop is a mixed ability course for complete beginners to experienced potters. It aims to improve learners’ throwing skill.

Beginners will focus on throwing cylinder shapes practising centring, opening and pulling, followed by other shapes. Advanced learners will continue to develop their own creativity and innovative abilities exploring more difficult shapes such as vases.

The course aims to develop your confidence and creativity through throwing techniques. There will be limited time for trimming due to the time needed for the pieces to dry to leather hard, instead, a “no turning” method will be introduced to ensure all pieces can be finished on the wheel.

Learners will:
1. Be able to demonstrate the basics of throwing.
2. Be able to show at least 2 items of similar shape and size.
3. Be able to finish at least 1 piece on the wheel without turning at leather hard stage.

Learners will also be expected to observe appropriate H&S rules.

Open Is there anything else I need to know about the course?

• Please bring an apron and do not wear anything you value highly.
• No open toed shoes in the pottery.
• It would be advisable to bring a notebook and pen.
• Learners with previous experience should bring in an example of their own work to help in the initial assessment process.

Some of your guided learning hours will be used to complete paperwork such as ground rules and individual learning plans for the course. You will then have time to revisit these targets with your tutor to assess your progress.

Open Will there be additional costs?

The cost of materials is included in the course fee. There will be no additional costs for this course.
An amount of clay is included within the course fees, all of the items made during the course will be glazed with the learner’s choice of colour.
A collection day for the finished piece will be arranged with the tutor.

Further clay can be purchased from the studio should you require it. Prices are currently £25.00 for approx. 1/2 bag this price might change depending on market values and clay type.

There are many other arts and craft courses on offer at Medway Adult Education. You may wish to concentrate or develop your skills with a particular medium such as painting in oils, pottery, stained glass or advanced watercolour for example. We also have a BTEC Art and Design Skills course that you could progress towards.
