Course Description
This course is designed to complement personal practice as well as enrich encounters with other artists’ work, you will come away with different art projects so that you can compare, contrast and experiment with techniques and learn through that process.

Frequent reference will be made to contemporary and historical drawings and paintings, presenting a wide range of approaches and expression. Each session is carefully structured and timed to enable learners to reflect and respond in more personal ways to their own projects as well as group assignments. Participants will leave the course with some great drawings and paintings as well as improved knowledge, skill and understanding.
Prosp Description
Learners will:

1. Use at least 2 drawing materials including: pencil, graphite, charcoal, pen & ink. This will develop skills and confidence in drawing through careful observation and rendering.

2. Use at least 2 different painting materials including: watercolour, acrylics and Soft Pastels.

3. Demonstrate at least 2 painting techniques including impressionist, expressionist and realism, to produce original art pieces.
Prosp Learn
Learners will also:
* Observe appropriate health and safety requirements in the art studio as set out in the MAE ground rules/learners contract.

* Explore tones and types of paper: including watercolour paper, white cartridge paper and various tones of coloured paper to support your work.

* Incorporate relevant mathematical skills as part of the course through studying pencil measuring, proportion, shapes, geometrical forms, patterns, balance and symmetry.

* Build their confidence in planning and designing their own personal projects as well as taking part in the group discussions.

* Engage with and respond to a piece of art to practise comparative language and adjectives, which can stimulate and develop creative and critical thinking skills.

* Taking inspiration from a range of artists learners will gain further insight into artists’ ideas, methods and approaches to representational drawings and paintings.

*Note that each learner will be set specific targets based on the above and their individual starting point.

Prosp Suitable
This course is suitable for all levels, but participants will ideally have some prior experience of painting or creative practice in general. The learners will also gain the support and valuable advice of a qualified art tutor throughout the course. More importantly, the learners will have the time and space to be creative and have the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of other learners’ work within a group setting.

Assessment will play an integral part of the course, regarding the student's learning. This will be set and taught on an individual basis, to help achieve the learner's personal goals and aspirations.

All learners will be expected to maintain both a sketchbook of their ideas and inspirations and a portfolio of their work produced while on course.


EXHIBITING YOUR WORK:

There are a number of opportunities to exhibit the works that you will produce during your time on the course. This normally takes place in the centre gallery on the first floor.
Prosp Anything Else
• Basic drawing equipment of your own choice (at least one HB pencil and rubber);
• A sketchbook or cartridge paper to draw on - please do not purchase until your tutor has discussed your course with you on the first session;
• Some examples of your drawings and paintings as it would be very useful to see a small sample of your recent work, if you have any, so that the tutor can assess you skill level. Assessment will play a regular role in your tuition, both initially to set you on the right learning path, and continually during the course to help you achieve personal goals and standards.

You will need to provide your own materials for most activities, though easels, drawing boards and printing tools, will be provided. However, if you don't have any of the materials listed above, wait until you have spoken to the tutor before making too many purchases.

Medway Adult Education works with many partners locally such as Medway School of Art (Mid Kent College) and the University of Kent; information about their courses can be found in our studios, café and activities to inspire and help you make further progress - please see the community noticeboards in the Rochester Centre and again on Moodle. Your tutor will be able to talk through with you individual progression options.
There are many other arts and craft courses on offer at Medway Adult Education. You may wish to concentrate or develop your skills with a particular medium such as painting in oils or advanced watercolour for example. The skills learnt on this course are fully transferable to most courses within creative arts. Your tutor will be happy to advise you about progression courses, including those offered by other providers and on Moodle. Medway has an exciting and wide-range of events, exhibitions.

In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 90%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes.
