Course Description
This course will encourage creativity in the use of drawing and painting materials whilst working from still life, flowers, seascapes, landscapes and organic forms. Integral to this, you will gain a solid introduction and grounding in the elements of drawing: line, tone, colour, pattern, perspective and composition.
Frequent reference will be made to contemporary and historical drawings and paintings, presenting a wide range of approaches and expression. Each session is carefully structured and timed to enable learners to reflect and respond in more personal ways to their own projects as well as group assignments. Participants will leave the course with some great drawings and paintings as well as improved knowledge, skill and understanding of the art of drawing and painting.

Open What will I learn on this course?
Through active participation in a variety of observational exercises, you will broaden your experience of painting through a variety of techniques, colour mixing, practice drawing skills, plan compositions, colour combinations and use of mixed media.
The emphasis will be on exploring and developing your own individual style and approach.

Learners will:

1. Observe appropriate health and safety requirements in the art studio as set out in the MAE ground rules/learners’ contract.
2. Be able to use/practice basic techniques of paint mediums, convert images, explore and experiment with colour pallets through making their own compositions.
3. Use or practice a variety of drawing techniques and learn the fundamentals of drawing.
4. Develop research skills by looking at various artists' work and techniques.
5. Incorporate relevant mathematical skills as part the course through studying pencil measuring, proportion, shapes, geometrical forms, patterns, balance and symmetry.
6. Build their confidence in planning and designing their own personal projects as well as taking part in group discussions.
7. Engage with and respond to a piece of art to practise comparative language and adjectives, which can stimulate and develop creative and critical thinking skills.

• Basic drawing equipment of your own choice (at least one HB pencil and rubber);
• A sketchbook or cartridge paper to draw on.
• Assessment will play a regular role in your tuition, both initially to set you on the right learning path, and continually during the course to help you achieve personal goals and standards.

There are a range art appreciation and art history courses available at MAE which you may attend dependant on your personal aspirations.

Learners can make use of computers/internet to research selected work from various British and international contemporary and historical artists to inspire, enhance and develop their own creative learning.
