Course Description
This course provides an extensive approach to watercolour medium, which explores many aspects such as use of colour, tone, composition and the principal techniques are looked at in depth. By working from direct observation, photographic references, sketches, and imagination, learners will encounter a variety of stimulating subjects such as landscape, seascape, still life and natural forms.

Each session is carefully structured and timed to enable learners to reflect and respond in more personal ways to their own projects as well as group assignments.
Frequent reference will be made to contemporary and historical drawings and paintings, presenting a wide range of approaches and expression. It’s a wonderful way to experience watercolours in a supportive and friendly environment.
Prosp Description
Through active participation in a variety of observational exercises, you will broaden your experience of watercolours, practice drawing skills, colour mixing, a variety of watercolour techniques, planning compositions, colour combinations and use of mixed media. The emphasis will be on developing your own individual style and approach.

At advance level, learners will be continuously encouraged to expand their creative ideas and their technical potential. Learners will also be able to develop their drawing and painting skills through a range of materials and techniques.

Learners will:

1. Observe appropriate health and safety requirements in the art studio as set out in the MAE ground rules/learners contract.

2. Be able to use basic techniques of watercolour, watercolour mediums, convert images, explore and experiment with colour pallets through making their own compositions;
3. Use or practice a variety of drawing techniques and learn the fundamentals of drawing;
4. Develop research skills by looking at various artists' work and techniques;
5. Incorporate relevant mathematical skills as part of the course through studying pencil measuring, proportion, shapes, geometrical forms, patterns, balance and symmetry;
6. Build their confidence in planning and designing their own personal projects as well as taking part in group discussions;
7. Engage with and respond to a piece of art to practise comparative language and adjectives, which can stimulate and develop creative and critical thinking skills.

Suitable for beginners or experienced artists looking to broaden their horizons, the carefully structured course allows learners to progress and consolidate their learning at their own pace. Feedback will be through observation i.e. how the student's respond, perform, the work produced at the end of each session and their overall development. All learners will be expected to maintain both a sketchbook of their ideas and inspirations and a portfolio of their work produced while on course. Prosp Anything Else
For this course you will need to bring your own watercolour paints, round brushes sizes 6 & 10, watercolour paper 300gm (minimum size A3), 2B pencil, kitchen towel, masking tape. You will be encouraged to gradually build up your own collection of different mediums as the course progresses, under advice from the tutor. Prosp Additional Costs
You will be equipped with a portfolio of work and a foundation of core creative skills that will empower your art for years to come.

Medway Adult Education works with many partners locally such as UCA and the University of Kent; information about their courses can be found in our studios, café and on Moodle. Medway has an exciting and wide-range of events, exhibitions and activities to inspire and help you make further progress - please see the community noticeboards in the Rochester Centre and again on Moodle. Your tutor will be able to talk through with you individual progression options.
There are many other arts and craft courses on offer at Medway Adult Education. You may wish to concentrate or develop your skills with a particular medium such as painting in oils or advanced watercolour for example. The skills learnt on this course are fully transferable to most courses within creative arts. Your tutor will be happy to advise you about progression courses, including those offered by other providers.

If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes.
