Course Description
This course is for those who are new to, or are still relatively new to Calligraphy. The course will incorporate the use of double pencils, flat brush, Automatic pens, and Round Hand nibs, looking at and developing the Round Hand and Cursive scripts, working with colour, simple layouts and design. Those who have done some calligraphy can pick up on areas in which they feel less confident.

All work contributes to a portfolio of ideas and letter practice, developing a good hand.
Prosp Description
You will be introduced to or further develop your Round Hand, Cursive scripts in relation to the application of colour, design and presentation.

Learners will:
1. Look at Round Hand and Cursive scripts
2. Write using double pencils and a flat brush
3. Write using Automatic and Round Hand pens
4. Look at spacing and simple design using colour and layouts.
5. Produce a layout and a finished piece of calligraphy or concentrate on developing a particular script.

Calligraphy is a very precise and beautiful art form therefore maintaining a sketchbook, notes and a portfolio of work is extremely important to help you to keep a record of your development. Those who have already done some calligraphy please do bring examples of your work. Prosp Anything Else
You will need to bring three HB pencils, masking tape, A3 pad of cartridge paper or individual sheets (The Works in Chatham have an inexpensive range of paper sketch books), a 12” ruler (or longer), Winsor & Newton or Daler Rowney putty rubber, a craft knife or scalpel with a 10A blade, a ‘T’ and ‘Set’ Square . All these materials can be bought at Francis Iles in Rochester High Street, The Range or any other good art shop.
Those who already have done some calligraphy please bring your work box.
As the course progresses you will be advised on what to buy at the appropriate stages.

Medway has an exciting and wide-range of events, exhibitions and activities to inspire and help you make further progress- please see the community noticeboards in the Rochester centre and again on Moodle. Your tutor will be able to talk through with you individual progression options.
There are many other arts and craft courses on offer at Medway Adult Community Learning. The skills learnt on this course are fully transferable to most courses within creative arts. Your tutor will be happy to advise you about progression courses, including those offered by other providers.

On course, your tutor will mention how the use of Internet Technology may be used in relation to your own personal study of calligraphy. While you do not need any IT skills to enrol on this course, please do speak to your tutor if this is an area you would like to explore. Prosp Ictskills
