Course Description

Course Description

For this course you will attend lessons online working on projects at home with group tuition from your tutor. Please do not buy tools and equipment until you know that the course will run.

Join us on-line, through the Zoom app,
You will need to have the Zoom app loaded on your computer or laptop or tablet and be able to access your machine whilst seeing the screen on your device. You will be expected to understand the basics of using Zoom. Please have a practice before hand and make sure you know how to join a meeting, switch between gallery view and speaker view, mute and unmute yourself and raise your hand. (All very simple once you’ve had a quick practice!)

Dressmaking and Machine Skills:
Enjoy the certainty of a course that will run online through the autumn term. Join us for this relaxed class where we will find out more about using the functions of our sewing machine, and learn new sewing skills and techniques whilst working on fun, achievable projects. Suitable for beginners or improvers or those wishing to have a nice, social, sewing afternoon every week.
You will need your machine set up and working each week, and will need to be able to see your laptop/phone/computer fairly easily from your sewing position.
You will be offered some choice on what projects we make; all are designed to push your learning forward whilst having fun, and you’ll end up with some lovely items you are proud to have made.

You will need to purchase additional materials (please see section at the end)
Prosp Description
Learners will:
• Observe appropriate health & safety requirements in their own home.
• Demonstrate an understanding of cutting fabric with a pattern
• Experiment with different machine functions such as twin needle sewing, smocking, decorative stitching or zipper feet etc
• Create at least one item using these more advanced functions
We will be building on existing skills, learning some new techniques along the way for faster, more professional project completion.

Prosp Learn
For all abilities. Prosp Suitable
Learners will need the following tools and equipment:

• Pins
• dressmaking scissors or other sharp scissors that will cut fabrics successfully
• tape measure
• ruler
• paper and pen

You will need your own sewing machine, threaded, tested and working - although we will do our best to help you online with minor machine issues (subject to having time within the lesson), if your machine does not work, you may have to enjoy watching the lesson and sew later). Set it up fairly close to your computer/tablet screen so that you can easily flip between the two.

Some of your guided learning hours will be used to set the group and individual learning targets for the course. You will then have time to revisit these targets with your tutor to assess your progress.
Prosp Anything Else

Yes! You will need to purchase fabrics for your project. DO NOT buy any fabrics until your course has been confirmed one week before the start date.

For online courses - you will need a working sewing machine and all your materials ready for the start of the course.

• You will need some scraps of fabric to sew onto and experiment with and a selection threads for sewing.

• You will need some pieces of fabric for our projects. Maybe a pack of ‘fat quarters’ (pieces of fabric that are approx. 56cmx50cm – or a few half Mtr pieces of co-ordinating fabrics. You can also re-cycle old clothing/shirts/sheets/pillow cases if you have some where the fabric is still in good condition…..as long as you’ll have pieces that are roughly 20” or 50cm square….so that they are useable for whichever projects we choose.

• Your group may decide you’d like to learn about zips – in which case you may need to buy some zips – it’s often better value to buy a pack of 10 rather than individual ones. Choose a medium length of about 8-10” (20-25cm) .

Zoom Etiquette

You will be sent an email link with the unique meeting ID for the class.
You will need this ID to join the ZOOM hosted class.
Await the invite and then join the class

We are so pleased you are joining us – but in order for all of us to have an enjoyable experience it is necessary for you to ensure that your microphone is on MUTE throughout the class, which is easily located in the bottom left hand corner of your screen.

The exception to this is at the beginning and end of the class we will all say hello with microphone on UNMUTE, so that there is a feeling of being together in the class, so we will UNMUTE on arrival and then MUTE during the class - otherwise we run the risk of hearing people’s dogs barking, telephones ringing, sound feedback etc.

If you have a question or wish to share something with the teacher, please UNMUTE and ask.

At the end of the class you will again be invited to UNMUTE – so we can say goodbye.

To join the class

Open the zoom application and select 'join a meeting'. When prompted enter the meeting ID that the tutor has sent you via email.

Please join the meeting 5-10 minutes before the class start time.
The meetings are set-up to start with participants microphones muted.

Note the quality of the picture and sound will be much better from a laptop, tablet or PC– a mobile phone may be very small and the sound quality much less.

To pin the teachers video feed to be the one in view, hover over the picture of the teacher, 3 dots will appear at the top right of the picture, click these, in the drop down menu that appears, choose 'PIN video'.
